Life Museum
This interactive science museum spotlights topics linked to life,
from the viewpoint of a variety of disciplines: mathematics, physics,
biology, chemistry, history, ecology etc, emphasizing scientific
knowledge about the evolution of the Universe and Life, as well
as the achievements of man in understanding all this. This museum
has several areas interlinked by a science Train: science on stage
(theater, plays, video centers and experimentation laboratory),
Biodiscovering (microscope planisphers and mulimedia) and the Science
Park (13 open air interactive plays). Besides the architectural,
artistic and cultural Fiocruz heritage with scientific collections,
there is the history of the scientific feats at Manguinhos since
the times of the public health pioneer Oswaldo Cruz also, the Mourisco
palace that can be visited accompanied by guides and the greenery
of the park.

Republic Museum
The Catete Palace - seat of Brazil’s Republican Government
from 1897 to 1960 and stage the activities of eighteen Presidents
- has seen some of the most important events in Brazil’s
political life, including the Declaration of Brazil’s entry
into World Wars I and II, and the suicide of President Getúlio
Vargas in 1954. Transformed into a museum when Brasília
became the nation’s capital in 1960, and closed for restoration
from 1983 through 1989, the Republic Museum reopened with a broad-ranging
cultural program that includes exhibitions, concerts, plays, movies,
videos, boutiques, restaurants and a book-store. In 1993 it became
the first computerized museum in Latin American with multimedia
kiosks and a well equipped reference center offering 20,000 books.

Permanent Exhibitions:
* THE REPUBLICAN VENTURE
The history of the Republic is told through historic movements,
cultural expression and religious cults. The exhibition consists
of more than a thousand pieces from the Museum's collection, besides
photographs, videos,light and sound. Gisela Magalhães and
Joel Rufino are the curators.
* I, GETÚLIO
The exhibition, in a multimedia style, work of the artists Cafi,
Marcelo Dantas and Rico Lins, looks over the personal collection
of President Getúlio Vargas - documents, books, personal
and campaign objects - donated by his Granddaughter Celina Vargas
do Amaral Peixoto. Divided into four segments, the exhibition Eu,
Getúlio draws a profile of the statesman in relation to
outstanding and recent historical events.
* CHRONOLOGY ROOM
The exhibition aims to be an aid to schools presenting the main
events of the last 110 years of Brazilian History, with a few incursions
into World History. Complement: Leticia Muhana's and Beth Rio's
video "Nós, Brasil",

Banco do Brasil Museum
The Museum is housed in three rooms to the 4th floor of the CCBB
- Banco do Brasil Cultural center, formerly the Chairman´s
offices. The exhibit contains items from the CCBB Rio collection,
from the National Library and the Historical Archives. The pieces
include furniture, canvases, safes, vases, lamp-holders, inkwell,
clock, assorted equipment, photographs and items from the Banco
do Brasil numismatics collection.

Brazilian Press Museum
The museum occupies an area of 600 sq.m at the headquarters of
the State of Rio de Janeiro Official Press and is the only one
specializing in the history of the Brazilian press. Its collection
is made up of publications which register important moments in
history such as the copy of the newspaper O Fluminense of May16th,
1888, declaring the abolition of slavery, the special edition of
the Folha de São Paulo informing the death of Santos Dumont
and also a commemmoration of the 100 years of the Proclamation
of the Republic in the Jornal do Brasil. One of the main attractions
is a replica of the printing press used by Gutemberg for the first
printing of a book with mobile characters: The Gutemberg Bible,
known as the first step of the written press. By means of the permanent
exhibition “Brazil in the Era of the Press”, visitors
may view books, albums, rare copies of the country’s newspapers,
old typewriters and presses and electronic composers.

Casa do Pontal Folk-Art Museum
The museum presents one of the most beautiful and complete visions
of the Brazilian culture. The collection, fruit of 40 years of
researches of the French designer Jacques van de Beuque, has 5,000
pieces of more than 200 artists from the whole country. The museum
is set on a pleasing summer-residence in one of the most beautiful
corners of the city, only 45 minutes from Copacabana, between the
sea and the ecological reserve of the Grumari range.

Casa dos Pilões Museum
Set in Brazil earliest gunpowder factory, dating back to 1808,
this museum offers information recorded in English and Portuguese,
and shows how gunpowder was manufactured through a motorized mock-up.

Contemporary Art Museum
Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, this Museum houses an impressive collection
of contemporary Brazilian art. Covering 2,000m2, its surrounding
verandah offers breath-taking views of Niterói, with the
Sugar Loaf, Pedra da Gávea and Christ the Redeemer a top

Earth Sciences Museum
Inaugurated in 1907, its mineral, rock, ore, meteorite and fossil
collection offers the visitors a rare opportunity of appreciating
either the beautiful natural shapes of the crystals or the scientific
information on several geological materials, both local and international.
In the meteorite windows - portraying rocks from the outer space
-, the visitor can observe the shapes, colors and frames of true
extraterrestrial materials. Today, the exhibition has around 5,000
geological samples.

Edison Carneiro Folklore Museum
Set up in two residences dating from the end of the 19th century,
and whose architectonic structure belongs to the National heritage
through the Institute of National Historical and Artistic heritage
(IPHAN), the Edison Carneiro Folklore Museum was created in 1968,
although its collection has been mounted from the 1980s through
the Defense of Brazilian Folklore Campaign. Its permanent exhibition,
set up again in 1994, contains about 1,400 objects which tell on
the many possible histories of Brazilian man and is organized in
five theme units: Life, Technique, Religion, Feasts & Art.

Eva Klabin Rapaport Foundation
The former residence of Eva Klabin Rapaport houses the works of
art she collected for sixty years. The very diversified collection
contains 1100 pieces from four continents. In the many ambiances
of this house-museum antique Egiptian, Greek and Chinese pieces,
paintings, sculptures, silver, furniture and carpets are on display.

Located in an area of 150,000m2 of Atlantic Rainforest cut by 7,5
kilometers of signposted hiking trails and surrounded by lovely
gardens with ornamental Portuguese ceramics Installations by Brazilian
contemporary artists, such as Iole de Freitas, Anna Maria Maiolino
and Helio Oiticica can also be seen in the Museum’park. The
main building houses a major Portuguese life collection dating
back to the XVII-XIX centuries, Brazilian colonial furniture and
one of the most significant collections of oriental art in a Brazilian
public institution, with examples of Chinese and Indian sculpture,

Once the home of connoisseur and collector Castro Maya, this mansion
today houses a permanent collection of modern art (Portinari, Antônio
Bandeira, Di Cavalcanti, Iberê Camargo, Guignard, Picasso,
Matisse and Salvador Dali, as well as furniture and decorative
items. It also features a collection of Braziliana with maps of
XVII and XVIII centuries, paintings, watercolors, engravings and
albums by travelers exploring Brazil during the XIX century (Debret,
Rugendas, Taunay). Designed by modern architect Wladimir Alves
de Souza, this estate offers a panoramic view of the Guanabara
Bay and downtown Rio.

Historical and Diplomatic Museum
A rare example of neoclassical architecture, the Itamaraty Palace,
headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1899 to 1970,
was built after the design of José Maria Jacinto Rebelo.
The building was completed in 1854 as a mansion house and sold
to the Republican Government in 1899 when it was occupied by the
presidency until 1897. The Palace collection includes furniture,
carpets, porcelain, statuettes and paintings. The Historical Archive
has a collection of about six million documents, from 1808 until
our days. The Map Collection contains 31.800 items between maps,
charters, atlas and globes. The Library has about 160 thousand
books and more than 1,500 newspaper titles.

House of Benjamin Constant Museum
A country estate that was once the home of Benjamin Constant de
Magalhães, as teacher of the Royal Military School, he was
one of the disseminators of positivism in Brazil, and his involvement
in the republican movement had the support of the young Army officers
his pupils. During the provisional administration of Marechal Deodoro
da Fonseca, he was Defence Minister and Minister of the Public
Education Correios e Telégrafos, i.e.our first Minister
of Education. He taught Mathematics and directed the Blind Boys
Institute, later named Benjamin Constant Institute. The area of
10,651 m2 planted with trees which surrounds the museum is the
ideal place for leisure and is open to the public daily from 8am
until 6pm.

House of Rui Barbosa Museum
Born on November 5th 1849 in Salvador, Bahia, Rui Barbosa studied
in Recife and São Paulo. He entered public life at an early
age as a provincial and general deputy. A legal expert, journalist,
politician and diplomat, he played an active role in the decisive
movements shaping the dynamics of the history of Brazil. The mansion
housing this museum was the home of Rui Barbosa during the last
28 years of his life. Dating back to 1849, it is an important landmark
in XIX century architecture in Rio, reflecting some neo-Classical
influence. The museum collection includes 1,400 items of furniture
and fittings, as well as decorative objects, and items of personal
use, pictures and vehicles, with a 1913 Benz automobile of particular
interest, in addition to a priceless library. Covering some 9,000
square meters, this park is one of the few green areas open to
the public in the Botafogo district, offering recreational activities
for children, and also attracting senior citizens.

Images of The Unconscious Museum
Set up in 1952 by Dr. Nise da Silveira, this Museum features works
produced during occupational therapy sessions by patients at the
Pedro II Psychiatric Center. Directly linked to the painting and
modeling studies of this institution, the Museum receives fresh
works every day to add to its collection, currently estimated at
around 250,000 items. These images of the unconscious are not only
open to interpretation on a therapeutic basis, but also constitute
true works of art that stand out for their dramatic harmony, beauty

Indian Museum
A building dating back to 1880 that is typical of the townhouses
lining the Botafogo district, this is today home to one of the
most important collections of artifacts linked to the indigenous
peoples of South America. As an scientific and cultural arm of
the Nacional Indian Foundation - Funai - Fundação
Nacional do Índio, this Museum today holds 14,000 items,
together with 500,000 textual documents, 16,000 local and foreign
works on indigenous ethnology and related matters constitute the
permanent collection of the Marechal Rondon Library, which specializes
in these topics, with 50,000 pictures, among photos, films, videos-tapes
and 200 sound recordings. In the gardens there is a display of
three life-size indigenous environments built by the Indians themselves.
The Guarany-Mbyá from the Sapukay village in Bracuí,
Angra dos Reis, built a Houseof Prayer (“Opy”). The
Xavantes, from Mato Grosso, made their traditional habitation (“Ri´”).
The Wajãpi home (“Jurá”) it was built
as part of the exhibition “The Wajãpi: Time and Space
in the Amazon”. Each piece is viewed as a powerful resource
for involving the public as it welcomes visitoros and communicates
different feelings and sensations

International Naïve Art Museum of Brazil
The adjective näive is the most frequently used to describe
the kind of painting also called ingenuous, self-taught and at
times primitive. The museum is set on a pleasant mansion, one block
away from the Corcovado train station. Its collection includes
the world’s largest and most complete collection of this
kind: 8,000 paintings by artists from all over Brazil and 130 countries,
dated from the XV century to the present day. The MIAN is an accomplishment
of the Lucien Finkelstein Foundation and houses his private collection.

Justice Museum
This Museum organizes and promotes permanent and temporary exhibitions
of documents and items that portray the activities of the Judiciary
in the History of Brazil since Colonial times. A visit to this
Museum includes: the Plenary of the Appeal Court of the former
Federal District; which is perfectly preserved with its original
furniture; the Closed Courtroom, showing the functions of the former
Civil and Criminal Courts; and the Mirrors Room, which houses temporary
exhibitions.

Museum of Astronomy and Affiliated Sciences - MCP
One of the research institutes under Brazil’s National Research
Council (CNPq), it was opened to the public in 1985. Since then,
it has produced studies of Science and History in general, focusing
particularly on Brazil and the dissemination of Science and Museology.
Its collections consist largely of scientific instruments belonging
to the National Observatory.
Its Permanent Exhibition (Four Aspects of Origin) spotlights four
aspects of modern science: Origin of the Universe; Origin of Material;
Origin of Life; and Origin of Information. This Museum is designed
to show how a technologically advanced society developed the concepts
of space and time, stressing the importance of scientific instruments.
Star-gazers can view the sky from a dome through an equatorial
telescope (Heyde, 21 cms) dating back to the 1830s, on Wednesday,
Saturday and Sunday.

Museum of Modern Art
Conceived in 1948, the institution occupied the annex of the Boavista
Bank in the Candelaria district and in 1952, was transferred to
the area supported by stilts of the present Gustavo Capanema Palace,
then Ministry of Education and Culture. On this second site, the
first great Museum of Modern Art exhibition was held with prize
winning works from
the 1st São Paulo Biennial in 1951 together with works by
various Brazilian artists. In 1958, its final transference to the
Flamengo Aterro marked the beginning of a course to encourage the
production of modern artistry. This construction represents an
architectural mark, which is the result of the design by architect
Affonso Eduardo Reidy and the landscape project of Burle Marx.
Since August, 1990, when it returned to its normal activities following
a fire which occurred in 1978, the Museum has been presenting great
national as well as international exhibitions. At present, the
Museum has a collection of about 11.000 objects with sculptures
and paintings by internationally renowned as well as Brazilian
artists such as Bruno Giorgi, Maria Martins, Di Cavalcanti and
also representatives of neo-concrete art such as Lygia Clark, Helio
Oiticica, Franz Weissman, Amilcar de Castro and Wyllis de Castro.

Museum of the First Empire
Home of the Marquesa de Santos. Designed by Pierre Joseph Pézerat
in neo-classical style, this summer home was commissioned by Emperor
Pedro I for his great love Domitila de Castro Canto e Melo, the
Marquesa de Santos, who lived here from 1826 to 1829. The main
attractions of the house consists of the building and its interior,
with murals by Francisco Pedro do Amaral and bas-reliefs by Marc
and Zeppherine Ferrez. The history of Brazil’s First Empire
(1822-1831) is revealed through contemporary documents.

Museum of the Imperial Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora da
Glória

Inaugurated in 1942, it features XIX century objects of material
and historical value donated by Brazilian nobles. Its permanent

as well as other items used in earlier times to celebrate masses

National Fine Arts Museum
Since it was first established in 1937, the National Fine Arts
Museum has been located in the building that once housed the National
Fine Arts School. Its neo-Classical facade is a landmark on what
was once Avenida Central, today Avenida Rio Branco. Its galleries
house Brazilian works of art ranging from the XVII to the XX century,
as well as works by foreign artists that include paintings, sculptures
and drawings. This Museum also features a collection of folk-art
reflecting the regional characteristics of Brazil, in addition
to a collection of images, medals, African art, and furniture.
It also offers halls for temporary exhibitions. The library has
about 15 thousand publications, including Brazilian and foreign
works and is open from Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm, Free

National History Museum
The National Historical Museum, created in 1922, is one of the
most important museums in Brazil, consisting of over 287 thousand
items, among which the largest numismatic collection of Latin America.
The architectonic complex that houses the Museum had is beginning
with the construction of the Santiago Fort, at the Calaboose Point,
one of the strategic places for the defense of the city of Rio
de Janeiro.

century, due to its legendary participation in the New York-Paris
race.
* Equestrian Sculpture of D. Pedro II
Thanks to the team work of the Laboratory of Conservation and Restoration
and the financial support of the Museum's Friends Association,
in 1999 the restoration of the monumental equestrian statue of
D.Pedro II was concluded. Work of sculptor Francisco Manoel Chaves
Pineiro, it was molded in gypsum in 1886 to commemorate the surrender
in Uruguaiana in September 18, 1865, during the Paraguayan war,
the sculpture was never casted in bronze.
* Collection Rodolfo Bernardelli
This 60-piece collection includes busts, molds and models of Rodolfo
Bernardelli (1852-1931), perhaps the most renowned sculptor graduated
from the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts.
* Collection Armament
The Armament collection is one of the most complete and systematic
of the National Historical Museum. With 2,000 arms of national
and foreign fabrication, some of which very rare, this collection
is being gradually increased.
Classified as "Hunting and War", the objects were used
for hunting purposes, target practice, war and personal protection.
* Coins Tell The Story
As part of the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the National
History Museum, the permanent exhibition "Coins Tell the Story" will
be open to the public from December 2002. It comprehends all systems
of trade used by man
from the very first to the implementation in the 21st century of
a unified currency - the Euro - to facilitate commercial transactions
between countries of the European Union.
* Numismatic Collection
The numismatic collection of the National Historical Museum is
the largest in its kind in Latin America and one of the world's
most important one.
* Portuguese - Brazilian Reference Center
One of its objectives is to transmit Portuguese culture among museum
enthusiasts.

National Museum
The Palace that has been home to the National Museum since 1892
was donated to the Prince-Regent John VI by Portuguese merchant
Elias Antonio Lopes in 1818. After the collapse of the Brazilian
Empire, it was used as a barracks, then a school, and finally became
the seat of the Assembly that drew up the first Constitution of
the Brazilian Republic. Its attractions include fossil skeletons
of pre-historic animals and Etruscan ceramics, as well as Egyptian
mummies and sarcophagi, together with indigenous weapons and objects,
stuffed animals and minerals from all over the world. Part of this
collection belonged to Emperor Pedro II, who was a botanist, and
his wife the Empress Teresa Cristina, an archeologist. This Museum
also has a nursery garden covering 40,000 m2 and a library specializing
in the natural and anthropological sciences with 442,000 volumes.

The Museum has a precious collection with more than 4,000 pieces

Rio de Janeiro City Historical Museum
Built in the XIX century, the mansion housing the City History
Museum is set in what was once the Morro Queimado coffee plantation,
owned by the Marquis of São Vicente. In 1887, it was acquired
by the Count of Santa Marinha who redecorated it in its current
style. This Museum portrays Rio de Janeiro from its founding in
1565 to the mid-XX century, highlighting the sweeping urban transformations
that changed the face of the city. Its permanent collection of
some 17,000 items is a major iconographic benchmark, featuring
furniture, photographs and paintings by many well-known artists.

Roberto Marinho Radio Museum
Inaugurated in March 2004 and open to the public on April 12, the
Museum is a initiative of AERJ (Rio de Janeiro Radio and TV Association).

Professionals of the Field.

Theatres Museum
A collection of some 36,000 items and documents focused on the
history of scenic arts is housed In this Museum, covering some
200200m2. The painting collection displays studies by Eliseu Visconti
for the murals decorating the Municipal Theatre in downtown Rio,
while the furniture includes chairs from the Lyric Theater - the
main entertainment center of Brazil’s Second Empire. The
photograph section has some 5,000 studies of artists and their
performances, while the library includes many rare books, some
dating back to the XVII century, in addition to a collection of
programs from the Municipal Theater. The manuscript section includes
the score of the opera Jupira, by Francisco Braga, while the wardrobe
collection includes treasures such as the costumes worn by Dulcina
and Odilon in O Imperador Galante.

Tram Museum
Photo-display portraying the history of the tram in Rio de Janeiro
from its introduction to the 1960s, when it went out of service.

Urban Cleaning Museum
A rare example of XIX century architecture, this building was declared
a national monument preserved by IPHAN in 1938. It was restored
by COMLURB in 1996 in order to house the Museum of the Urban Cleaning.
In addition to recounting part of the history of Rio, showing how
the city grew, solving problems and creating decent living conditions
for its residents, it also offers guided tours and recreational
activities, as well as seminars, exhibitions and cultural presentations.

Escola Municipal de Capoeira Mestre Pastinha.
Specializing in Afro-Brazilian culture, this center deals with

Art and Progress Foundry
The establishment once worked as an old foundry for safes and
ovens and is one of the few remaining buildings after the remodeling

Banco do Brasil Cultural Center
In 1989 the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center was opened. The
most complete facility of its kind in Rio, its magnificent

Bernardo Monteverde Memory Space
Engineer Bernardo Monteverde from the state of Santa Catarina
was responsible for many works in Brasília at the beginning

Brazilian Academy of Letters
The building, a replica of the Trianon of Versalles, was built
to house the French delegation at the International Comemorative
Exhibition of the Centennial Brazilian Independence, in 1922,
and later bestowed by the French Gonvernment so that it became
the
head office of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. During the
one-hour guided tour, visitors will avail themselves of knowing
the annexes
to the Machado de Assis’s House which includes the Auditorium,
the place where academics take office, and the room where the academics

Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute
Founded on October 21st, 1938 in Rio de Janeiro by a group
of Brazilian intellectuals the purpose of this institute is
to preserve
the
nation’s culture while encouraging historical and geographical
studies, as well as other social sciences focused on Brazil,
in addition to gathering and disseminating documents reflecting
the
formation of the nation. Its library consists of some 500,000
titles, many dating back to the XVI - XIX Centuries, much of
which was
donated by Emperor Pedro II, including the valuable Teresa
Cristina Collection. Its archives include 150,000 documents,
manuscripts,
official papers and iconography. With its main collection located
on the 12th floor, this museum features some 2,300 items, including
porcelain, crystal, silverware, medals and decorations, paintings,
period furniture and the famous prehistoric skull of the Lagoa
Santa Man.

Caixa Cultural Complex
The complex was created in 1987 and contains the Nelson Rodrigues
Theater, considered to be one of the best stages for theater
and dance in the country, two art galleries (Galeria de Arte
e Minigaleria)
for temporary exhibitions and also the thematic bistro”Camarote
Café”. The building, a landmark of architecture in
the 70s, is in the shape of a trunk of wide-based pyramids and
is surrounded by gardens, passageways and small shallow artificial
lakes. One of the façades is wholly decorated in high relief
by Caribé, while another one is an installation in marble
by Pedro Correia de Araújo Filho. Inside, the walls of the
ground and second floors are covered with gigantic cared wooden
panels by Ernani Macedo and Robert Sá and, on the third
floor, is the glass mosaic by Freda Jardim.The program of the
Caixa Cultural Complex aims at generating opportunities for
new artistic
talents and at giving the public access to the works of acclaimed
national and international artists.

Carnival Memory Center (Centro de Memória do Carnaval)
The space houses, contained in a totally computerized databank,

of over 20 thousand items related to Carnival in Brazil and around

Constituição Cultural Center
A big old house reformed, preserving open tiles on some of the
walls of its exterior in order to mix the old with the new. The

Corcovado Mountain Train Cultural Center
The collection displays aspects of the entire history of Corcovado
with photos and newspaper reports on the inauguration of the
railroad on October 9th, 1884. Also on display is a carriage
made in Switzerland
in 1883 and the engine of Brazil’s first electric train
in 1910, which substituted the little steam engine. The great
attraction
is a four meter head, in terra-cotta on a concrete structure,
sculptured in Paris by architect and sculptor Paul Landowsky
and used as a
model for the statue of Christ. The head is exhibited on a
body of heavy iron and cast iron bars commissioned by artist
Sergio
Marimba.

The palace, plain in style, was projected by Gastão
Bahiana to be the Statistics Pavilion for the centenary celebrations

Federal Justice Cultural Center - CCJF
The beautiful historic four-story building with an area of
about seven thousand sq. meters was the headquarters of the
supreme
court from 1909 to 1960. It became the Federal Justice Cultural
Center
after it was restored and holds exhibitions focused on Brazilian
art and above all photography. The first floor houses the “Justice
and Citizenship” permanent collection. The second has
temporary exhibitions and on the ground floor there is an exhibition
showing
the building before and after its restoration, a theater and
eating area.

Figner Mansion ArteSesc
The mansion was built in 1912 by the Czech entrepreneur Frederico
Figner (one of the most important names in the history of image
and sound in Brazil and founder of Casa Edson and Odeon Records)
who arrived in 1891 with a battery phonograph in his luggage
and several accessories including recording cylinders. In eclectic
style, the building, an example of a “middle-class house” of
the early 20th century, nowadays contains the ArteSesc Cultural
Center on the first floor and the restaurant Senac Bistro on
the ground floor.

Dating back to 1820, the severe neo-Classical facade of this
building is softened by the charm of its roof-line, which highlights

Hélio Oiticica Art Center
This building was constructed during the XIX Century to house
the Music Conservatoire, as well as the Brazilian Dramatic Arts
Conservatoire.
In addition to classes and concerts, it also hosted literary
lectures by well-known Brazilian poets and writers. Located in
the historic
heart of Rio, its collection includes works by artist Helio Oiticica.
It also organizes temporary exhibitions of works by Brazilian
and foreign artists, supplemented by lectures and discussions
disseminating
contemporary art. Covering some 1,950 square meters, with facilities
well up to the standards of major world centers, and fitted with
sophisticated security equipment, climatization and lighting
its six exhibition galleries are backed by a lecture room, as

Disseminating scientific knowledge through original exhibitions

Institute of Brazilian Architects - Rio de Janeiro
The 1904 building of the IAB-RJ (Institute of Brazilian Architects
- Rio de Janeiro) is under the protection of the law of preservation.
Designed by architect Francisco de Azevedo Monteiro Caminhoá,
its façade is covered with wooden decorations and frames,
rigorously modulated and balanced, which give the structure a solemn
European-style character typical of the buildings of the time.
It once housed the "Sala das Machinas" (Engines Room)
of the Companhia Ferro Carris Jardim Botânico (CFCJB). The
Institute contains a 300m² space for exhibitions, an auditorium
for 120 people, an approximately 200m2 mezzanine for displays
and a library.

Jongo da Serrinha Cultural Center
Since 1970 the families who have inherited the tradition of
the Morro da Serrinha “jongo”, with the idea of preserving
and promoting the rhythm, present artistic shows with the Jongo
da Serrinha group, responsible for its promotion throughout the
nation and for keeping up the tradition within the community up
to the present day, by means of research and data among the older
generation. The “jongo” is a dance performed in a circle
brought from Angola to the southeastern region of the country by
the Bantu nation slaves during the Brazilian colonial period. The “jongo”,
a rhythm which is exclusive to this region of the country, is considered
one of the “fathers of the samba” and profoundly
influenced the beginnings of Brazilian popular music.

José Bonifácio Cultural Center
The Center is in the Gamboa, a neighbourhood in the port area
of the city that keeps important aspects of the history of
the Negros
in the country, among them the Machado de Assis literature
- born on the Livramento hill. The building that houses the

was
buildt in neoclassical style typical of the urban architecture
of the Second reign and was built in 1877 to house the José Bonifácio
school. The Cultural center was created in 1983 and its objectives
are to preserve, promote and spread through studies and interchanges
between national and international institutions, the memory
of the afro brazilian culture as well as maintain catalising
activity
of cultural actions: presenting of films and videos, seminars,
exhibitions, theatre and dances testimonies and organization

Light Cultural Center
This American Renaissance style building in what was formerly
the Rua Larga dates back to 1911, and was once the head-office
and
garage for the Light tramway service. Since 1994 it has housed
this Cultural Center, which plays an active role in the city’s
cultural life. Its public areas and galleries feature exhibitions,
particularly: Espaço Rio Antigo, with a collection of historic
photographs by Augusto Malta; Sala Memória which houses
a collection of photographs, equipment and furniture once used
by the Rio de Janeiro Tramway Light and Power Company; Espaço
di Cavalcanti, displaying four canvasses by this famous artist
which form a vigorous portrait of daily life in Rio. It also
includes the Lamartine Babo theater and the Covered Plaza.

Moreira Salles Institute
Exhibitions and parking free.
Located in Gavea, a district of the southern area of Rio, the
IMS of Rio de Janeiro is the largest cultural center of the
institution.The buildings,covering a total of 3,000 m² , are surrounded by
10,500 m² of gardens open to the public. Designed by Olavo
Redig, with a landscape project by Roberto Burle Marx, the
house was inaugurated in 1951 and was used as a place of residence
by the Moreira Sales family. Adapted to its new purposes, it
contains
exhibition halls and rooms, classroom, library, auditorium,cafeteria,
art shop, atelier and guest rooms. The IMS Technical Photographic
Reserve is a collection of more than 80,000 photographs many
of which portray the city of Rio de Janeiro.

National Archive

Created in 1838, the National Archive is currently inaugurating
a new phase in terms of institutional modernization. Representing
one of the most important monuments of the Brazilian 19th century
neoclassic architecture, the new main offices are located in
a four building complex disposed around a central patio, which,
for
115 years, housed the Brazilian Mint (1868 – 1983).
Its vast collection includes documents, photographs, maps and
plants, records, films and video-magnetic tapes originating from
various
institutions, ranging from 16th Century up until the days of
today.
The library, estimated to include over 40 thousand volumes,
presents approximately 5 thousand rare works of art. Among
these treasures
is the ‘Lei Áurea’ (the Golden Law that
abolished slavery in Brazil).

The building in neoclassic style, surrounded by Corinthian
columns, was inaugurated in 1910. The collection dates from
the 18th century
and contains approximately 9 million rareties such as letters
written by Princess Isabel when she was only 10, the first
newspapers printed
in the country, and many historical documents as the two copies
of the Mainz Psal’ter, a book printed in 1462 by Gutenberg
followers, a 1572, edition of the ‘Lusiada’ by Camões,
the De Angelis Collection, and the Teresa Cristina Collection
donated by Emperor D. Pedro II.

Navy Cultural Hall
The Navy Cultural Hall is installed at the old customs docks
which were built on an earth embankment area, in the second half
of the
19th century, localized at the the end of Quinze de Novembro
Square, in front of Presidente Vargas Venue. That area before
being incorporated
to the Navy Ministry belonged to the Lloyd Brasileiro, a government
shipping company by now extinct.

The only vessel of its kind in the Americas this 1808 row-boat

Rio de Janeiro Architecture and City Planning Center is located
in a mansion built in 1879 by Joaquim Fonseca Guimarães,
as his residence. In the 20th century, it housed the traditional
Jacobina School, which remained there until the beginning of the
1970’s.In 1987, the building was declared part of the nation’s
historical and artistic heritage and, from 1995 on, its facade

Telemar Cultural Center
The building that has houses the center was built in 1918 and has
just been reformed, resulting in a gain of over two thousand square
meters in internal space. The building’s façade was
preserved. There are four floors, interposed among the building’s
eight levels, connected by glass stairs and elevators.
The center’s collection, one of the most important on the
history of Brazilian telecommunications, contains documents, furniture,
objects and photos. The center’s varied program includes
activities related to music, theater, videos and art.
Visitors will find a library with an abundance of research material – magazines,
newspapers and on-line computers; exhibition rooms, which house
the exhibition Corpos Virtuais, with works by artists who use technology
in their art; a multi-use theater (with 180 seats); a bistro and
a wide range of equipment, such as a huge panel made up of four
high definition plasma screens.
