2007 Pan American Games will be held in Rio
Victory tastes like a gold medal to Rio tourism
Brazilian sports were not the only ones to celebrate the
fact that Rio de Janeiro has been chosen to host the Pan
American Games of 2007. Tourist agencies have also been very
excited with the news published in August 2002 in Mexico.
At the time, Rio defeated the American city of San Antonio
in Texas by 30 votes to 21.
Rio will receive visitors during the four years before the
Games, as its presence in the media will encourage credibility
and tourists. 500 thousand tourists and members of delegations
are expected for the 16 days of the competition. Moreover,
the lovely images publicized in the whole world during the
Pan American Games will attract new visitors afterwards as
well. This happened in Sydney, Australia which, after the
2000 Olympic Games, has had a significant increase in the
number of tourists every year.
The city will benefit from the event both socially and in
the tourist sector with the amplification of the transport
system and hotel capacity. The choice of Barra da Tijuca
as the venue for the “heart” of the Games will
allow for the development of the region’s budding tourist
potential. Riocentro, a space that needs only a few adaptations
to house modalities such as weightlifting and judo, was one
of the key factors that contributed to Rio being chosen to
hold the Games and will benefit from them as well. The leading
center for fairs, exhibitions and congresses in Latin America,
it will also be the Center of Operations for the 2007 Pan
American Games. Athletes will be lodged in houses and hotels
around the conventions center, which will make it accessible
to users. All this infrastructure will encourage greater
humanization and socialization of the region, the City Hall’s
main goals.
Now that Rio de Janeiro will be the city-host for the 2007
Pan American, Setur / Riotur will have an extra attraction
to offer when selling the destination for international events.
The multi-facets of the city are further enhanced by the
sporting legacy.
